Hanging Basket

Using the Red Wet Market lampshade for the basic structure, then applied a line pattern to decorate it, leaving some empty areas for the light from inside to shine through. The most interesting part of the hanging light is the fact that it utilizes the elastic properties of the veneers. The two layers of veneer clip together to press against both sides of the cable.

Modelling Protoypes

To initiate the project, it is about look into how layering different materials could enhance their structure, form, characteristics, and behavior. The main goal by the end of the experiments was to explore a variety of materials and to increase and enhance their qualities and intrinsic values.

After during the first week of the experiment state, the final decision on materials to work with was veneer and cork, as these materials showed the most potential, primarily due to their strength and flexibility.

Making A Venner Arch

For this experiment, the goal was to enhance the veneer to be as strong as possible with minimal layers. First of all, using machines to cut out and sanded an arch shape, and apply the layers glue and waited for it to dry. The end result was very strong and difficult to break when applying force from above, which seemed quite impressive with only four layers.

Veneer Strip Jig

The results of the strips are satisfactory. However, if all the strips were perfectly consistent with each other, it would take a longer amount of time to ensure each strip cut out was even.

The veneer strip jig has been created to address this issue.

Putting together a jig with to increase the number of strips at one time allows for sanding strips are all the same width and length, thereby speeding up production.

Hanging Basket Development

These red wet market lamps are classic fixtures in Hong Kong and can be seen in of the city's wet markets.

The design of these lamps serves as the basic foundation for our next experiment with veneer strips.
